Glasgow Botanic Gardens Visit

It was a warm sunny day for the Parklea Association trip to the Glasgow Botanical Gardens, which was funded by a choose life grant. A guided tour of the refurbished Kibble Palace and the glasshouses was arranged and our group were also allowed behind the scenes to see the propagation and misting houses.

This was a great trip, as some of the clients were meeting for the first time, and considering this, they socialised and bonded well.It had great educational value with the clients seeing new plants,

familiar plants in new surroundings and testing their knowledge with plant identification. We then had a walk around the new herb garden which contained a mixture of herbs, vegetables, culinary plants and cereals. Again a number of herbs and vegetables were recognised and named, and there was a lot of discussion was created over the oats, barley and wheat.

We had our picnic lunch in a shady area due to the hot sun. During lunch we were joined by a very tame grey squirrel, which ate a crisp or two but turned its nose up at a lettuce leaf and strawberries.

With lunch over and feeling refreshed we embarked on a walk down to the River Kelvin.  For some, the steps were a slight challenge but the walk was enjoyed by everyone as we discussed the trees and wildlife.

We completed our walk by taking the long path back looking at the century beds, where plants are categorised.
