Recognition of Individual Achievement in Horticulture
Gardening Certificate for People with Complex Needs

Parklea Association has been offered an opportunity to participate in the development of this award.  Although the award will be overseen by the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society in conjunction with Oatridge College, Parklea will be responsible for the development of all recording documents, teaching aids, implementing the work practices, assessing the candidates and assisting candidates with the assembly of candidate portfolios.  RCHS will visit Parklea annually to verify recorded documentation, meet candidates and inspect portfolios.   

What is the object of this award?

The objective of this exercise is to assist individuals in horticultural practices that is evidence that someone with complex needs or/and difficulties has met a disciplined level of learning in horticulture, It will be evidence that have also set and met targets in person goals and has developed or improved softer skills such as concentration, interaction with others, self esteem, confidence and health & safety awareness.  Successful candidates will be awarded a Recognition of Individual Achievement in Horticultural Award from the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society.

Seven Core Activities:

  • Cultivation

  • Seed sowing
  • Propagation
  • Potting on
  • Plant care
  • Harvesting

From the following list thirteen activities must be completed to compliment the seven core horticultural activities which are:

  • Support Plants
  • Plant up a container/hanging basket
  • Plant a tree or shrub
  • Edge up a flower bed
  • Collect and press dried flowers
  • Identify vegetables/fruits
  • Identify hand tools
  • Mix potting compost
  • Make Bird/Insect box
  • Make a bird feeder
  • Hoe a planted area
  • Recycle
  • Pruning/dead heading
  • Glasshouse maintenance
  • Planting structures
  • Maintaining hard surfaces
  • Maintaining garden furniture
  • Seed collecting
  • Plant labelling
  • Plant bulbs
  • Design a garden poster
  • Make alpine trough
  • Hand crafts:       
    • Greeting cards
    • Soaps
    • Candles
    • Bookmarks
    • Paper
  • Tool maintenance
